Work done by a gas in the process shown in the figure will be
  1. positive
  2. negative
  3. zero
  4. cannot be determined

Solution

We know that, the work done in cyclic thermodynamic process is equal to the area under $p-V$ curve. $\therefore W_1=$ work done in expansion from $C \rightarrow D \rightarrow A$ is positive and $W_2=$ work done in compression from $A \rightarrow B \rightarrow C$ is negative. It is clear from the figure,
$\therefore$ Net work done, $W=W_1-W_2 < 0$
