Which of the following reagents is used in Hoffmann elimination reaction of amines
  1. $\mathrm{NaNO}_{2}+\mathrm{HCl}$
  2. $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COCl}$
  3. $\mathrm{Ag}_{2} \mathrm{O} / \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}, \Delta$
  4. $\mathrm{CHCl}_{3}+\mathrm{KOH}$

Solution

When tetraalkylammonium halide is heated with moist silver oxide, it gives quaternary ammonium hydroxide which on strong heating undergoes $\beta$-elimination to give alkenes; the reaction is called Hoffmann elimination. In this reaction the major product is least substituted alkene. e.g.
