Which of the following is used to convert olefins into aldehyde?
  1. $\mathrm{H}_{2}$ and $\mathrm{CO}$
  2. $\mathrm{H}_{2}$
  3. CO and alkyne
  4. $\mathrm{CO}$

Solution

Aldehydes are prepared from alkene in oxo process. In presence of cobalt tetracarbonyl, alkynes react with $\mathrm{CO}$ and hydrogen to form aldehydes. Aldehydes are also prepared by hydroboration oxidation of alkynes. The hydration of propyne gives acetone.
