Which of the following compounds will react with $\mathrm{NaHCO}_{3}$ solution to give sodium salt and carbon dioxide?

Solution

Only acetic acid is more acidic than carbonic acid (conjugate acid of $\mathrm{NaHCO}_{3}$ ) hence it dissolves in $\mathrm{NaHCO}_{3}$,
$\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOH}+\mathrm{NaHCO}_{3} \longrightarrow \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COO}^{-} \mathrm{Na}^{+}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3}\left(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}+\mathrm{CO}_{2}ight)$

while phenol and $n$ -hexanol are less acidic than carbonic acid and hence do not dissolve in $\mathrm{NaHCO}_{3}$
