Which of the following compounds is not expected to show Lassaignes' test for nitrogen ?
  1. Propanenitrile
  2. Hydroxylamine hydrochloride
  3. Nitromethane
  4. Ethanamine

Solution

Lassaigne's test is used for the detection of nitrogen and given by all nitrogenous compound except diazo
compounds. This test is shown only by the compounds containing $\mathrm{C}$ and $\mathrm{N}$ both hence hydroxyl amine hydrochloride $\left(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{NOH} . \mathrm{HCl}\right)$ will not perform this test.
