Which of the following compounds follows octet rule?
Which of the following compounds follows octet rule?
$\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$
$\mathrm{NO}_2$
$\mathrm{SCl}_2$
$\mathrm{SF}_6$
Solution
$\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$ and $\mathrm{SF}_6$ molecules have an expanded octet, i.e., more than eight electrons around the central atom. $\mathrm{NO}_2$ molecule has odd number of valence electrons. In $\mathrm{SCl}_2$, sulphur attains noble gas configuration of 8 by forming two covalent bonds, thus obeying octet rule.
