Which of the following compounds does not undergo haloform reaction?

Which of the following compounds does not undergo haloform reaction?
  1. Ethanal
  2. Propanal
  3. Propanone
  4. Butanone

Solution

Haloform reaction is given by acetaldehyde, all methyl ketones $\left(\mathrm{CH}_3-\mathrm{CO}-\mathrm{R}\right)$ and all alcohols containing $\mathrm{CH}_3(\mathrm{CHOH})-$ group. Propanal $\left(\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{CHO}\right)$ does not have $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CO}$ group and hence does not give haloform reaction.
Thinking Hatke - Q. 31 This reaction can be used to distinguish methyl ketones $\left(\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CO}-\right)$ from ketones.
