Which of the following are formed by Xenon
- $\mathrm{XeF}_{3}$
- $\mathrm{XeF}_{4}$
- $\mathrm{XeF}_{5}$
- None of these
Solution
Xe compounds can contain only even no. of fluorine atoms.
Xe has a complete filled 5 p configuration. As a result when it undergoes bonding with an odd number ( 3 or 5 ) of F atoms it leaves behind one unpaired electron. This causes the molecule to become unstable. *
