Which from following instruments is used to determine the crystal structure?
  1. Scanning electron microscope
  2. FTIR spectrophotometer
  3. X-ray diffractometer
  4. Transmission electron microscope

Solution

X-ray crystallography is used to identify the molecular and atomic structure of the crystal. The crystal diffracts the incident $\mathrm{X}$-ray beam. By measuring the intensities and angle of these diffracted beams, the molecular structure of the crystal can be evaluated. Instrument is known as X-ray diffractometer.
