Which amongst the following is incorrect statement?

Which amongst the following is incorrect statement?
  1. C2 molecule has four electrons in its two degenerate π molecular orbitals.
  2. H2+ ion has one electron.
  3. O2+ ion is diamagnetic.
  4. The bond orders of O2+, O2, O2- and O22- are 2.5, 2, 1.5 and 1, respectively.

Solution

1. Electronic configuration of C2 molecule is σ 1s2σ*1s2σ2S2σ*2S2π2Px2=π2py2

Hence it has 4 electrons in π molecular orbitals.

2. H2+ has one electron as one electron is removed from H2 molecule.

3. Electronic configuration of O2+ ion is

σ2s2 σ*2s2 σ2p22 π2Px2=π2Py2π*2px1π*2Py0

It has one unpaired electron so it is para-magnetic.

4. Bond orders of O2+, O2, O2- and O22- are 2.5, 2, 1.5 and 1 respectively.
