Which among the following is NOT an amorphous solid?
  1. Rubber
  2. Butter
  3. Tar
  4. Camphor

Solution

- Solids can be classified as crystalline or amorphous on the basis of the nature of order present in the arrangement of their constituent particles. Crystalline solid - A crystalline solid usually consists of a large number of small crystals, each of them having a definite characteristic geometrical shape - The arrangement of constituent particles (atoms, molecules or ions) in a crystal is ordered and repetitive in three dimensions. - There is a regular pattern of arrangement of particles which repeats itself periodically over the entire crystal. - Example - Sodium chloride, quartz, diamonds. Amorphous solid - In amorphous solid the arrangement of building constituent is not regular but haphazard. - They have short range order and are isotropic in nature. - Example: Silicon, quartz, glass etc. - Whereas are crystalline solid in which the arrangement of building constituent is regular.
