When a body slides down from rest along a smooth inclined plane making an angle of 30° with the horizontal, it takes time T. When the same body slides down from the rest along a rough inclined plane making the same angle and through the same distance, it takes time αT, where α is a constant greater than 1. The co-efficient of friction between the body and the rough plane is 1xα2-1α2 where x=__________.

Solution

On smooth incline,

a=gsin30°

by S=ut+12at2

S=12g2T2=g4T2 ...(i)

On rough incline

a=gsin30°-μgcos30°

by S=ut+12at2

S=14 g(1-3μ)(αT)2  ...(ii)

By (i) and (ii)

14gT2=14g(1-3μ)α2T2

1-3μ=1α2 μ=α2-1α213

x=3.00
