What would be the product of following reaction SiCl4 Excess of H2O ? (Major Product)
  1. SiCl3(OH)
  2. Si(OH)4
  3. SiCl2(OH)2
  4. SiCl4 (no reaction)

Solution

We know that when silicon tetrachloride react with excess of water then it undergoes in full hydrolysis.

The condition of hydrolysis is there should be presence of vacant orbital and there should be lesser stearic hindrance. Hence,

SiCl4 H2O excess SiOH4
