The cresol is the m-methyl phenol. Phenol is acidic in nature. It gives the acid-base reaction with base. So, when it reacts with the base, it will form the phenolate ion. After that phenolate ion act as a nucleophile. This nucleophile gives the nucleophilic substitution reaction with the alkyl halide. It will follow the reaction mechanism.
