What is the function of parathyroid hormone (PTH)?
  1. Decrease the blood calcium levels
  2. Increase the blood calcium levels
  3. Decrease the bone resorption
  4. Increase the bone formation

Solution

PTH increases the Ca²⁺ levels in the blood by acting on bones and stimulating the process of bone resorption (dissolution/ demineralisation), stimulating reabsorption of Ca²⁺ by the renal tubules and increasing Ca²⁺ absorption from the digested food. It is a hypercalcemic hormone, i.e., it increases the blood Ca²⁺ levels.
