What are X and Y respectively in the following reactions

X¯+D2OC2D2+P

Y¯+D2OCD4+Q

  1. AlCl3,CaCl2
  2. Be2C,Al4C3
  3. Al4C3,CaC2
  4. CaC2,Al4C3

Solution

C2D2 is deuteroacetylene and CD4 is deuteromethane. These compounds can be preapred by deuterolysis of respective acetylide and methanide.

CaC2 is an acetylide and Be2C & Al4C3 are methanides. These compounds on reaction with D2O, give deuteroacetylene and deuteromethane respectively.

CaC2 + 2D2OC2D2 + CaOD2Al4C3  + 12D2O3CD4 + 4 AlOD3
