What are the products formed when an aldehyde $(R \mathrm{CHO})$ is reacted with Tollen's reagent?
  1. $\mathrm{Ag}, \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}, R \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{OH}, \mathrm{NH}_3$
  2. $\mathrm{Ag}, \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}, R \mathrm{COO}^{-}, \mathrm{H}_2$
  3. $\mathrm{Ag}, \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}, \mathrm{RCOO^{- } , \mathrm { NH } _ { 3 }}$
  4. $\mathrm{Ag}_2, \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}, \mathrm{RCOO}^{-}, \mathrm{NH}_3$

Solution

When an aldehyde $(R-\mathrm{CHO})$ reacts with Tollen's reagent, the following reaction takes place : $\begin{aligned} & R-\mathrm{CHO}+\underset{\text { (Tollen's reagent) }}{2\left[\mathrm{Ag}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_2\right]^{+}}+3 \mathrm{OH}^{-} \longrightarrow \\ & R \mathrm{COO}^{-}+2 \mathrm{Ag}+4 \mathrm{NH}_3+2 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}\end{aligned}$ Thus, the products formed are, $\mathrm{Ag}, \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}, R \mathrm{COO}^{-}$ and $\mathrm{NH}_3$ and option (c) is the correct answer.
