Two statements are given below.
Statement-I: In dry cleaning, the solvent $\mathrm{Cl}_2 \mathrm{C}=\mathrm{CCl}_2$ was earlier used and now it is replaced by liquified $\mathrm{CO}_2$
Statement-II: In bleaching of paper, $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ was used earlier and now it is replaced by chlorine gas
Correct answer is
Statements I, II both are correct
Statements I, II both are incorrect
Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect
Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct
Solution
(I) Tetrachloroethene $\left(\mathrm{Cl}_2 \mathrm{C}=\mathrm{CCl}_2\right)$ was earlier used as solvent for dry cleaning. The compound contaminates the ground water and is also a suspected carcinogen. Now it is replaced by liquid $\mathrm{CO}_2$ which result in less harm to ground water.
(II) $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_2$ is used for purpose of bleaching clothes in the process of laundry, which gives better result and makes use of lesser amount of water.
