Two satellites, A and B, have masses m and 2m respectively. A is in a circular orbit of radius R and B is in a circular orbit of radius 2R around the earth. The ratio of their kinetic energies, KAKB is:
  1. 2
  2. 12
  3. 1
  4. 12

Solution

Let v be the orbital velocity of the satellite which is given as v=GMr

Here M be the mass of the earth, m be the mass of satellite and r is the orbit radius.

Kinetic energy, K=12mv2=12mGMr2=GMm2rmr

Ratio, KAKB=mAmB×rBrA=m2m×2RR=1
