Two poles standing on a horizontal ground are of heights 5 m and 10 m respectively. The line joining their tops makes an angle of 15° with the ground. Then the distance (in m) between the poles, is

Solution

Let, DC be the pole of height 5 m and AB be the pole of height 10 m.

Also, let DMAB, then ACDM is a rectangle and hence, AM=DC=5 m and BM=AB-AM=10-5=5 m and the distance between the poles is AC=MD=K (let).


In ΔBDM
tan15°=BMMD=5K

K=5tan15°

K=53+13-1×3+13+1

K=53+1+233-1

K=52+3 m.
