Two long straight parallel wires are separated by a distance ' 2 d '. Each wire carries a current ' I ' in the same direction. The magnetic field at a point ' P ' midway between them is
  1. $\frac{2 \mu_0 I}{r}$
  2. zero
  3. $\frac{\mu_0 I}{4 r}$
  4. $\frac{\mu_0 \mathrm{I}}{2 \mathrm{r}}$

Solution

The currents in the two wires are in same directions. The magnetic fields at the midpoint due to the two currents will be equal and in the opposite direction. Hence the net magnetic field at midpoint will be zero.
