Two ideal batteries of emf V1 and V2 and three resistances R1, R2 and R3 are connected as shown in the figure. The current in resistance R2 would be zero if

  1. V1=V2 and R1=R2=R3
  2. V1=V2 and R1=2R2=R3
  3. V1=2V2 and 2R1=2R2=R3
  4. 2V1=V2 and 2R1=R2=R3

Solution

In order that the current is zero, the potential drop on R2 due to V1 must be nullified by that due to V2.

Accordingly,

V1=R1V1+V2R1+R3V1R3=V2R1
V2=R3V1+V2R1+R3V2R1=V2R3
