Two conductors have the same resistances at 0 °C but their temperature coefficients of resistance are α1 and α2. The respective temperature coefficients for their series and parallel combinations are :

  1. α1+α2, α1+α22
  2. α1+α22, α1+α22
  3. α1+α2, α1 α2α1+α2
  4. α1+α22, α1+α2

Solution

Change in resistance due to temperature is given by, R'=R1+αT

For Series Combination:

Req=R1+R2

2R1+αeqT=R1+α1T+R1+α2T

2R1+αeqT=2R+α1+α2RT

αeq=α1+α22

For Parallel Combination:

1Req=1R1+1R2

1R21+αeqT=1R1+α1T+1R1+α2T

21+αeqT=11+α1T+11+α2T

21+αeqT=1+α2T+1+α1T1+α1T1+α2T

21+α1T1+α2T=2+α1+α2T1+αeqT

21+α1T+α2T+α1α2T=2+2αeqT+α1+α2T+αeqα1+α2T2

Neglecting small terms

2+2α1+α2T=2+2αeqT+α1+α2T

α1+α2T=2αeqT

αeq=α1+α22
