Three forces acting on a body are shown in the figure. To have the resultant force only along the y-direction, the magnitude of the minimum additional force needed is
  1. $\sqrt{3} \mathrm{~N}$
  2. $0.5 \mathrm{~N}$
  3. $1.5 \mathrm{~N}$
  4. $\frac{\sqrt{3}}{4} \mathrm{~N}$

Solution

Net force along $x$-axis zero. Let the unknown force be $F$ along $x$-axis $\begin{aligned} & \therefore F+1 \sin 30^{\circ}+2 \sin 30^{\circ}-4 \sin 30^{\circ}=0 \\ & \therefore|F|=0.5 \mathrm{~N} \end{aligned}$
