The variation of stopping potential V0 as a function of the frequency (ν) of the incident light for a metal is shown in figure. The work function of the surface is

  1. 2.98 eV
  2. 2.07 eV
  3.  1.36 eV
  4. 18.6 eV

Solution

The relation between the stopping potential and the frequency of the incident light is given by

eV0=hν-ϕ   ...1

When V0 = 0,

ϕ=hν   ...2

Substitute the value of the frequency corresponding to zero stopping potential into equation (2) to calculate the required work function of the material.

ϕ=6.626×10-34 J·s×5×1014 Hz1.6×10-19 J/eV=6.626×5162.07eV
