The variation of stopping potential for metals A, B, $C$ and D with frequency of incident radiation is as shown in the figure. For which metal, stopping potential is higher for lower values of threshold frequency $\left(v_{o}\right)$ ? [The frequency of incident radiation, ' $v^{\prime}$ is same.]

Solution

The electrons will have greater kinetic energy for the metal which have smaller threshold frequency (and hence work function). Hence stopping potential will be higher for them. Hence metal A will have higher stopping potential.
