The trace of a square matrix is defined to be the sum of its diagonal entries. If A is a 2×2 matrix such that the trace of A is 3 and the trace of  A3 is -18 then the value of the determinant of A is_____

Solution

Let A=abc3-a   A=3a-a2-bc

A3=abc3-aabc3-aabc3-a

=a2+bcab+3b-abac+3c-accb+(3-a)2abc3-a

=a2+bc3b3ccb+(3-a)2abc3-a

trA3=a3+abc+3bc+3bc+3bc-abc+(3-a)3=-18

a3+9bc+3-a3=-18

9bc+27-9a(3-a)=-18

bc+3-3a+a2=-2

3a-a2-bc=5    |A|=5
