The sum of the absolute maximum and absolute minimum values of the function fx=tan-1sinx-cosx in the interval 0,π is
  1. 0
  2. tan-112-π4
  3. cos-113-π4
  4. -π12

Solution

Given,

fx=tan-1sinx-cosx

Now differentiating the function we get,

f'x=cosx+sinxsinx-cosx2+1

Now equating f'x=0 to find critical points,

cosx+sinxsinx-cosx2+1=0

cosx+sinx=0

tanx=-1

  x=3π4

Now checking the value of function at critical point and boundary point we get,

x 0 3π4 π
fx -π4 tan-12 π4

So, we get,

fxmax=tan-12 fxmin=-π4

So, the sum will be =tan-12-π4

=cos-113-π4
