The stationary points of the curve y = 8 x 2 - x 4 - 4 are____

The stationary points of the curve y=8x2-x4-4 are____
  1. (0,4),(2,12),(2,12)
  2. (0,4),(2,12),(1,2)
  3. (0,4),(1,2),(2,12)
  4. (0,4),(1,2),(1,2)

Solution

Given curve y = 8x2 - x4 -4

Differentiate on both sides

dydx = 16x - 4x3

To get stationary points dydx = 0

4x4-x2=0

x = 0 , x2 = 4

 x = 0 , ±2

x= 0 y = 80-0-4=-4

x = 2  y = 84 - 16 - 4 = 12

x = -2  y = 84 - 16 - 4 = 12

So required stationary points are 0, -4, 2, 12, -2, 12.
