The ratio of energies of photons produced due to transition of electron of hydrogen atom from its (i) second to first energy level and (ii) highest energy level to second energy level is
  1. 6:1
  2. 3:1
  3. 12:1
  4. 8:1

Solution

Let $E_1$ be the energy of the first energy level Then $E_2=\frac{E_1}{4}$ Highest level $\mathrm{E}_{\infty}=0$ $\therefore \mathrm{E}_2-\mathrm{E}_1=\frac{\mathrm{E}_1}{4}-\mathrm{E}_1=-\frac{3}{4} \mathrm{E}_1$ $E_{\infty}-E_2=0-\frac{E_1}{4}=-\frac{E_1}{4}$ $\therefore \frac{E_2-E_1}{E_{\infty}-E_2}=3$
