The product of lengths of the perpendiculars drawn from the point (-1,5) to the pair of lines 2x2-xy-3y2+6x+y+4=0 is
  1. 682
  2. 6826
  3. 652
  4. 6526

Solution

Given:

2x2-xy-3y2+6x+y+4=0

First, we will find the separate equations.

2x2-xy-3y2=0

2x2-xy+2xy-2xy-3y2=0

x+y2x-3y=0

Now, m & l be the constants term in the above equations.

x+y+m=0

2x-3y+l=0

Then,

2x2-xy-3y2+6x+y+4=x+y+m2x-3y+l

On comparing the coefficients, we get

lx+2mx=6x

l+2m=6  ...i

ly-3my=y

l-3m=1  ...ii

Solving i & ii, we get

m=1 & l=4

So, we have the separate equations for lines are

x+y+1=0  ...iii

2x-3y+4=0  ...iv

Now, we need to calculate PM & PN.

PM=-1×1+5×1+112+12=52

PN=2×-1+-3×5+422+-32=1313

Now,

PM×PN=52×1313

                    =6526.
