The product formed in aldol condensation is:

The product formed in aldol condensation is:
  1. a-beta hydroxy aldehyde or a betahydroxy ketone
  2. an alpha-hydroxy aldehyde or ketone
  3. an alpha, beta unsaturated ester
  4. a beta-hydroxy acid

Solution

Aldehydes and ketones having at least one $\alpha$-hydrogen atom in presence of dilute alkali give $\beta$-hydroxy aldehyde or $\beta$-hydroxy ketone.
Caution Those aldehydes which does not have $\alpha$-hydrogen atom like $\mathrm{HCHO}$, does not give aldol condensation reaction.
