The primary side of a transformer is connected to 230 V, 50 Hz supply. The turn ratio of primary to secondary winding is 10 : 1. Load resistance connected to the secondary side is 46 Ω. The power consumed in it is:
  1. 12.5 W
  2. 10.0 W
  3. 11.5 W
  4. 12.0 W

Solution

The voltages associated with the primary and the secondary side of the transformer are related to the turn ratio as follows:

V1 V2=N1 N2   ...1

From equation (1), it follows that

230V2=101

V2=23 V

Hence, the power consumed can be calculated as follows

P=V22R=23×2346=11.5 W
