The \(\mathrm{pH}\) of \(10^{-8} \mathrm{M} \mathrm{HCl}\) solution is
8
-8
Between 7-8
Between 6-7
Solution
\(\mathrm{HCl}\) is a strong acid. All the acids have \(\mathrm{pH}\) in the acidic range, i.e. below 7. The concentration of \(\mathrm{HCl}\) is given as \(10^{-8} \mathrm{M}\). pH is calculated based on the protons of the acid and the water. \(10^{-8} \mathrm{M}\) is a very low concentration and hence the protons from water are also considered. This gives the value of the \(\mathrm{pH}\) of about 6.8 which is very close to 7 .
Thus, the correct answer is option (d).
