The peroxomonosulphuric acid is

.
The oxidation number of $\mathrm{S}$ in this acid is
  1. $+2$
  2. $+4$
  3. $+5$
  4. $+6$

Solution

$\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{5}$ has the following structure:

the oxygens in peroxide linkage i.e. $\mathrm{O-O}$ has oxidation number $=-1$ each
and in oxide linkage i.e $=\mathrm{O}$ and $\mathrm{H}-\mathrm{O}-\mathrm{S}$ it is $-2$
Let the oxidation number of sulphur be $x$.
Oxidation number of $\mathrm{H}=+1$
In $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{5}: 2 \times 1+\mathrm{x}+3 \times(-2)+2 \times(-1)=0$ $\mathrm{x}+2-6-2=0$ or $\mathrm{x}=+6$
thus Oxidation number of sulphur in peroxomonosulphuric acid $\left(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{5}ight)$ is $+6$.
