The oxide of a metal contains $40 \%$ of oxygen. The valency of metal is 2 . What is the atomic weight of metal?
  1. $24$
  2. $13$
  3. $40$
  4. $36$

Solution

$\because 40 \mathrm{~g}$ of oxygen is combined with $=60 \mathrm{~g}$ of metal $ \begin{array}{r} \therefore 8 \mathrm{~g} \text { of oxygen will be combined with }=\frac{60 \times 8}{40} \\ =12 \mathrm{~g} \text { of metal } \end{array} $ $\therefore$ Equivalent weight of metal $=12$ Now, Atomic weight $=$ Equivalent weight $\times$ valency $ =12 \times 2=24 $
