The oxidation states of iron atoms in compounds AB and C, respectively, are x, y and z. Then sum of x, y and z is ........... Na4FeCN5NOSANa4FeO4BFe2CO9C

Solution

Oxidation state of Fe in Na4FeCN5NOS:

Charge of CN =-1

Charge of NOS=-1

Suppose oxidation state of Fe = x

4+x-5-1=0x=+2

Oxidation state of Fe in Na4FeO4:

4+x-8=0x=+4

Oxidation state of Fe in Fe2CO9 =0 because carbonyl is neutral ligand.

The oxidation states of iron in these compounds will be

A = +2   B = +4   C = 0

The sum of oxidation states will be = 6.
