The number of real roots of the equation x 1 - x + 1 - x x = 13 6 is

The number of real roots of the equation x1-x+1-xx=136 is
  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 4

Solution

Given x1-x+1-xx=136

Let t=x1-x

i.e. x1-x>0 & x0,1

i.e. x1-x>0xx-1<0x0,1

Now, t+1t=1366t2-13t+6=0

t=13±169-14412=32, 23

i.e. when x1-x=32x1-x=94

4x=9-9xx=913

when x1-x=23x1-x=49

9x=4-4xx=413

Hence, there are two real roots.
