The most basic hydroxide among the following is

The most basic hydroxide among the following is
  1. CeOH4
  2. CeOH3
  3. LuOH3
  4. GdOH3

Solution

Basicity is a measure of the ease at which an atom will lose electron. For the lanthanides, the basicity decreases as the atomic number increases.

The order of the basicity for the lanthanides areLa3+ > Ce3+ > Pr3+ > Nd3+ > Pm3+ > Sm3+ > Eu3+ > Gd3+ > Tb3+ > Dy3+ > Ho3+ > Er3+ > Tm3+ > Yb3+ > Lu3+

and also Ce+4 is less stable than Ce+3 and thus it will readily accept e-  convert into Ce+3 and so it will less basic than Ce+3.

Hence, from all above observations it can be concluded that Ce(OH)3is most basic among all given options.
