The mean of the numbers obtained on throwing a die having written 1 on three faces, 2 on two faces and 5 on one face is
- 5
- $\frac{8}{3}$
- 1
- 2
Solution
Probability of getting $1=\frac{3}{6}=\frac{1}{2}$
Probability of getting $2=\frac{2}{6}=\frac{1}{3}$
Probability of getting $5=\frac{1}{6} \therefore \quad$ Mean $=\Sigma \mathrm{p}_{\mathrm{i}} \mathrm{x}_{\mathrm{i}}=2$
$\begin{array}{|l|l|l|} \hline \mathrm{x}_{\mathrm{i}} & \mathrm{p}_{\mathrm{i}} & \mathrm{p}_{\mathrm{i}} \mathrm{x}_{\mathrm{i}} \\ \hline 1 & 1 / 2 & 1 / 2 \\ \hline 2 & 1 / 3 & 2 / 3 \\ \hline 5 & 1 / 6 & 5 / 6 \\ \hline & \text{Total} & 2 \\ \hline \end{array}$
