The major products $P$ and $Q$ of the following reactions respectively are I. $n$-pentyl bromide $\xrightarrow{\mathrm{Zn} / \mathrm{H}^{+}} P$ II. $n$-pentyl bromide $\xrightarrow[\text { Dry ether }]{\mathrm{Na}} Q$
  1. pentane; decane
  2. pent-1-en; decane
  3. pentane ; pentane
  4. pentane : 1-decene

Solution

When $n$-pentyl bromide reacts with $\mathrm{Zn}$, $\mathrm{Br}$ atom is substituted by $\mathrm{H}$-atom to form pentane. But when $n$-pentyl bromide reacts with $\mathrm{Na}$ and dry ether, it undergoes Wurtz reaction and decane is formed.
