The line which is parallel to x-axis and crosses the curve y=x at an angle 45°, is
  1. y=14
  2. y=12
  3. y=1
  4. y=4

Solution

The equation of a given curve is

y=x ...i

On diffrenciating the above equation with respect to x we get the slope

dydx=12x

The slope of the line at x1, y1, m1=12x1

and let line parallel to x-axis is y=k ...ii

Whose slope, m2=0

Since, 45° is the angle between the line and the curve.

tan45°=m1-m21+m1m2

1=12x1-01

x1=14

y1=12 [from Eq.i]
 The required equation is y=12=k  [from Eq.ii]
