The increasing order of reactivity of alkaline earth metals with water is
  1. $\mathrm{Mg} < \mathrm{Sr} < \mathrm{Ca} < \mathrm{Ba}$
  2. $\mathrm{Ba} < \mathrm{Mg} < \mathrm{Ca} < \mathrm{Sr}$
  3. $\mathrm{Ba} < \mathrm{Sr} < \mathrm{Ca} < \mathrm{Mg}$
  4. $\mathrm{Mg} < \mathrm{Ca} < \mathrm{Sr} < \mathrm{Ba}$

Solution

From top to bottom of the group, size of atoms increases hence the valence electrons goes away from the nucleus. Therefore, the reactivity of alkaline earth metals increases from top to bottom of the group.
