The frequency of fifth harmonic of a closed pipe is equal to the frequency of third harmonic of an open pipe. If the length of the open pipe is 72 cm . then the length of the closed pipe is
  1. 60 cm
  2. 45 cm
  3. 30 cm
  4. 75 cm

Solution

For open organ pipe, $1_{\mathrm{o}}=72 \mathrm{~cm}, \mathrm{f}=\frac{3 \mathrm{v}}{2 l_0}$
For closed organ pipe, $\mathrm{f}=\frac{5 \mathrm{v}}{4 l_{\mathrm{c}}}$ $\begin{aligned} \therefore \frac{3 \mathrm{v}}{2 l_0} & =\frac{5 \mathrm{v}}{4 l_{\mathrm{c}}} \Rightarrow l_{\mathrm{c}}=\frac{5 l_{\mathrm{o}}}{6}=\frac{5 \times 72}{6} \\ & =60 \mathrm{~cm} \end{aligned}$
