The effect of increase in temperature on the number of electrons in conduction band (ne) and resistance of a semiconductor will be as:
  1. Both ne and resistance decrease
  2. Both ne and resistance increase
  3. ne increases, resistance decreases
  4. ne decreases, resistance increases

Solution

In case of semiconductors as the temperature increases the electrons in the valence band get excited and jump into the conduction band and hence the conductance increases resulting in the decrease of resistance. Thus, as temperature increases, ne increases and resistance decreases.
