The correct order of decreasing acid strength of following acids is
(1) trichloro acetic acid
(2) trifluoro acetic acid
(3) acetic acid
(4) formic acid
\(1>2>3>4\)
\(1>3>2>4\)
\(2>1>4>3\)
\(2>4>3>1\)
Solution
As \(-I\)-effect increases, \(-\mathrm{COOH}\) group becomes more electron deficient and tendency to loose \(\mathrm{H}^{+}\)ions increases i.e., acid strength increases. As \(+I\) effect increases. Acid strength decreases. Thus, correct order of acid strength is : trichloroacetic acid > trifluoroacetic acid > forminc acid > acetic acid.
Hence, the correct option is (c).
