The combination of two identical cells, whether connected in series or parallel combination provides the same current through an external resistance of 2 Ω. The value of internal resistance of each cell is

When the cells are connected in series is=2ε2r+R=2ε2r+2

When they are connected in parallel, the emf is εp=εr+εr1r+1r=ε and the effective internal resistance will be rp=r×rr+r=r2. Therefore, the current will be,

ip=εR+r2=ε2+r2=2ε4+r

Since, is=ip2ε2r+2=2ε4+rr=2 Ω
