The carbon-based reduction method is NOT used for the extraction of
  1. tin from  S n O 2
  2. iron from Fe 2 O 3
  3. aluminium from Al 2 O 3
  4. magnesium from MgCO 3 · CaCO 3

Solution

Smelting : The process of extracting a metal in the state of fusion is called smelting. In this process the ore is mixed with carbon, obtained after the above reactions and heated in suitable furnace.

SnO2 and Fe2O3 are reduced by C reduction method.
Al2O3 and MgCO3. CaCO3 are reduced by electrolytic reduction.
