The bond lengths of C2, N2 and B2 molecules are X1,X2 and X3pm respectively. The correct order of their bond lengths is
  1. X3>X1>X2
  2. X2>X3>X1
  3. X1>X2>X3
  4. X1>X3>X2

Solution

Bond length is inversely related to bond order. The bond orders of given molecules can be calculated using molecular orbital theory.

bond order =Number of BMO e--Number of ABMO e-2

BMO = Bonding molecular orbital

ABMO = Anti bonding molecular orbital

The molecular orbital electronic configuration of B2 is σ1s2σ*1s2σ2s2σ*2s2π2px1=π2py1

BO of B2=6-42=1

The molecular orbital electronic configuration of N2 is σ1s2σ*1s2σ2s2σ*2s2π2px2=π2py2σ2pz2

BO of N2=10-42=3

The molecular orbital electronic configuration of C2 is σ1s2σ*1s2σ2s2σ*2s2π2px2=π2py2

BO of C2=8-42=2

Hence, the order of their bond length is

X3B2>X1C2>X2N2
