Sum of two numbers is $40$. One is $\dfrac{2}{3}$ of the other. The smaller is
  1. $16$
  2. $24$
  3. $15$
  4. $20$

Solution

Larger $= y$, smaller $= \dfrac{2y}{3}$. $y + \dfrac{2y}{3} = 40 \Rightarrow \dfrac{5y}{3} = 40 \Rightarrow y = 24$. Smaller $= 16$.
